Browne sets up 11 run win for the Spirit

The Northern Spirit won the toss and elected to bat in the Twenty20 match against the Otago Sparks at Cobham Oval, Whangarei.

They got off to a steady start with quick hitting from Kate Pulford who made 20 from just 15 balls, but were soon on the back foot with the dismissals of Natalie Dodd and Anna Wilkins in the teens.

However, they struck back hard in the form of Nicola Browne who dominated with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 41*.

Browne was supported well by Wendy Horneman and then Morna Nielsen who finished the innings off with a quick fire 19 from only 12 at the end.

The wickets were distributed evenly between Emma Campbell, Sarah Tsukigawa and Tessa Hopkinson each taking 1 apiece for the Sparks.

Otago lost early wickets but held strong with opener Katey Martin displaying excellent skill by scoring 54 from 47 balls.

She lacked support from the top order before Megan Kane came to the crease managing to score 39.

Disappointing running between the wickets cost Otago dearly with three of their five batsmen falling to run outs and eventually ran out of balls, falling 11 runs short.

Browne was the only wicket taker for the Spirit with her all round performance vaulting her to the top of the overall MVP table.
