Michael Pollard beat the rain to post a maiden domestic one-day century for the Wellington Firebirds today.
Pollard’s unbeaten 114 is duly noted in the record books despite his side’s Ford Trophy match against the Central Stags at Napier falling victim to the weather.
The game at Nelson Park was eventually abandoned after the elements drove the players from the field with the Firebirds at 205 for eight after 46 overs.
They would have been lost without 22-year-old Pollard’s contribution as he faced 137 balls in 3-1/2 hours with eight fours beside his name as he sought to repair the damage that at one stage saw the visitors on 78 for five.
In his eighth one-dayer for the Firebirds, Pollard should have done enough to nail down an opener’s role for the remainder of the campaign.
Outside of his hand there was little to get enthusiastic about the Firebirds’ effort, with the next leading scorer being young wicketkeeper Craig Cachopa with 20.
Michael Mason and Kieran Noema-Barnett both took two wickets for the Stags.
