BLACKCAPS open tour with draw

The BLACKCAPS shared a draw with the Rest of South Africa XI after rain curtailed the fourth and final day at Benoni’s Willowmoore Park.

The hosts’ second innings came to an earlier completion before tea on 270 for eight, having progressed from 132 for four overnight.

Justin Ontong followed his first-innings half-century with an unbeaten 144 for the Rest.

Daniel Vettori found conditions more to his liking in the second innings, claiming three wickets for 77 runs off 29 overs.

James Franklin struck twice, including the dismissal of first-innings centurion and captain Neil McKenzie for two with the third ball of the day.

Scott Styris also claimed the wicket of Rory Peterson (24), but the tourists were unable to remove Ontong, who carried his bat through the innings, facing 325 deliveries in a minute short of four hours at the crease.

The BLACKCAPS move on to Centurion, where they take on the Proteas in the first Test of a three-match series.

Play commences at SuperSport Park at 7.30pm (9.30am local time), Saturday April 15.
