Bracewell: We won’t panic

BLACKCAPS coach John Bracewell will not panic after the side completed a winless two-game stay in Tasmania.

The New Zealanders lost both games against Australia and England of their Tri-Series campaign at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval.

But Bracewell said there would be no immediate reshuffling of his squad, and that he was confident after some aspects of his team’s performance.

He said: ”We here to win every game. The players we have are the players we have and we want to find out what we can get out of them and grow their experience.

“We have a 30-man World Cup squad and any of those players can be considered as back up.

“They will come over when they are in what the selectors think is the right condition. We’re not going to rush them back just because of a loss, panic and react just because of a bad result.

“What we’re getting is more knowledge of a number of our players. I thought Jeetan Patel and Mark Gillespie in particular really stood up to the pressure of international cricket.”

The coach admitted he wanted see an improvement in the team’s batting, after stating he fell their total of 205 at Hobart was ‘30 runs short’.

“We are in a batting slump collectively and we need to get more out of them. We have told them to relax, go out there and play their game.

“They’re working hard, physically, they appear to be doing all the right things, mentally they’re looking at their game, we’ve told them to relax and we think we’re getting close.”

Bracewell will give Shane Bond time to recover from the back problem that ended his spell against England early.

He said: “We can’t really comment for 24 to 48 hours. We – and Shane especially – want to get it checked out rather than second guess.

“I always worry when one of my players gets injured, and he is a key performer for us. Obviously, he has a history with back issues and that is something we want to work him through. Obviously it’s a concern.”

“If Shane’s not available, then we’re used to that. If he’s not there, it’s a rich opportunity for someone else to step up learn and develop themselves for a time that will be of real value to us.”

The BLACKCAPS next game is against Australia at the SCG on Sunday.
