Symonds ruled out

Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds is out of the Tr-Series after surgery on his injured shoulder.

Symonds, injured while batting against England in Sydney on Friday, undertook medical scans which showed the necessity of operating.

Team doctor Trefor James said: "Andrew Symonds has ruptured the biceps tendon in the right shoulder and will receive surgery to repair the tendon.

“Andrew will certainly miss the remainder of the series and will undergo intensive physiotherapy following surgery. His return to cricket will depend on his progress."

Symonds said: "We won't know how bad this injury is until after surgery. I felt it go during the game but I didn't realise how bad it was.

“I batted on but the pain was considerable and I was advised by the team physio Alex Kountouris to come off.

"I feel optimistic about the future because I know I'm a good healer - my wrist injury healed quicker than expected and is fine now. I'll do whatever it takes to get back as quickly as possible."

Australia selectors have named their team to face the BLACKCAPS at MCG. It is: R Ponting (c), A Gilchrist, M Hayden, M Clarke, B Hodge, M Hussey, C White, B Lee, M Johnson, S Clark, S Tait, and G McGrath (12th).
